Electric Shower Pressure Relief Device (PRD

What Is an Electric Shower Pressure Relief Device (PRD)?

If you own or are considering an electric shower, you may have heard the term Pressure Relief Device often abbreviated to PRD. But what exactly is it, and why is it such an important safety feature in your shower?

Let’s take a closer look.

What Does a Pressure Relief Device Do?

A Pressure Relief Device is a small but essential component found in most modern electric showers. Its role is simple, but critical. It acts as a failsafe to protect the internal components of the shower in the event of a blockage or pressure build-up.

Electric showers heat cold mains water on demand via an internal heating element. If water flow becomes restricted (for example, due to a blocked shower head, a kinked hose, or even frozen pipework) pressure inside the unit can rise to unsafe levels.

The PRD is designed to step in when that happens. It safely releases excess pressure by allowing a small amount of water to escape from the shower unit. Think of it as a pressure-release valve, working quietly behind the scenes to keep your shower safe.

How Do You Know If the PRD Has Activated?

One of the most common signs that a PRD has activated is water leaking from the bottom of the shower unit. While this may look concerning, it’s actually a sign that the device has done its job.

Once the PRD has been triggered, it will need to be replaced before the shower can operate properly again. You may also notice a complete loss of water flow, or erratic temperature control, all signs that the system needs attention.

What Causes a PRD to Activate?

Several factors can trigger the PRD, including:

  • A scaled-up or blocked shower head

  • A kinked or damaged shower hose

  • Frozen pipes in colder months

  • A partially blocked or closed outlet

To prevent these issues, we recommend regular maintenance such as cleaning the shower head to remove limescale, particularly in hard water areas, and checking the hose for twists or damage.

Can I Replace the PRD Myself?

In some cases, replacing a PRD can be a straightforward DIY job, particularly if you’re confident with basic plumbing and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. However, because electric showers involve water and electricity, we always advise caution.

If you’re in any doubt, it’s best to consult a qualified engineer or professional installer. Your safety should always come first.
