The 5th June each year marks World Environment Day - an event organised by the United Nations to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment.

The annual event has been in place since 1974, with each year raising awareness on issues such as global warming, marine pollution, wildlife crime and sustainable consumption. At its core, the day is about inspiring change - both at a global level, and an individual level, in the homes and everyday lives of people across the globe.

As individuals, it’s important for us to take these opportunities to think about the ways we consume, and how we can safeguard the environment through making smarter choices. As a brand, this prompted us to think about how we can create products that have a positive impact.

Making changes in your home

In our homes, we’re faced with hundreds of choices - from what appliances to buy, to what toiletries and cleaning products we use. All of these can have an impact on the world around us.

Bathrooms can unfortunately be one of the worst offenders when it comes to things like energy and water waste. Traditional toilets, for example, can use as much as three gallons (13.6 litres) with every flush! Updating your old toilet is therefore a simple yet impactful way of making the transition to a more eco-friendly bathroom.

Another option for your home, and your bathroom, is to replace all lights with LED bulbs. This is an easy and effective way of making your bathroom more green, as LED bulbs last hundreds of times longer than traditional options - and use a fraction of the energy. If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere sunny, you can also invest in solar panels for electricity, and a solar water heater for low-cost warmth. It’s worth doing some digging into the options for solar energy in your area to find out more.

You can also switch to using natural, or zero-waste toiletries. The largest source of waste from bathrooms is from packaging that is not recyclable. Using bar shampoo and eco-friendly hand wash, as well as bamboo toothbrushes, goes a long way to being green and reducing your environmental impact.

The other big-hitter is the amount of chemical cleaners used in bathrooms. Using non-chemical cleaners ensures you keep your bathroom perfectly clean without pumping harmful chemicals down your drains. Do some research into eco-friendly brands or cleaning product alternatives, and you may be surprised by how many you find.

Finally, it’s probably no surprise that showers and baths can be a major player when it comes to wasted energy and environmental impact in a bathroom. We step into showers, turn them on, wait a few minutes for them to heat up, test the water, then adjust the temperature, then get in, then adjust the temperature again, and again, and again. All the while water - and the energy used to heat it - is flowing needlessly down the drain.

While this previously was the only real option, that’s no longer the case. Being able to monitor and control these parameters accurately gives you so much more freedom to optimise your entire home’s use of energy and water. And this doesn’t have to be an obsessive, check-it-as-you-go thing. With a good system, you can set desired parameters and relax - with only a few fine tweaks as needed.
